Is Literacy Possible For All? Angie Hanlin Says YES.
She's coming to WNY to speak to school leaders & teachers. Here's how you can see her.
I wrote about the work of Angie Hanlin here, after I heard her on the Melissa & Lori Love Literacy Podcast. She changed the way the way I thought of “all means all.”
The title of the podcast itself was tantalizing (“From 13% to 100% Literacy Proficiency with School Leader Angie Hanlin”), but it was Angie herself who galvanized the listener, went deep into the details of implementation, and communicated it clear as a bell. It was a revelatory moment.
I’ve been following Angie’s work ever since: she has served in the roles of classroom teacher, curriculum coordinator, instructional coach, professional development coordinator where she worked to train and coach teachers on research-based instructional practices and strategies, as a building principal at Matthews Elementary in the New Madrid County R-1 School District, as a superintendent, and I’m thrilled to announce that as part of the #WNYLiteracyInitiative, Angie Hanlin is coming to Western New York in October to run workshops specifically for school leaders.

Which School Districts Do the Best Job of Teaching Kids to Read?, The 74
The 74 has produced a new interactive map that examines the relationship between poverty and reading proficiency - just as we did with our #WNYReadingReportCard. Like we did, The 74 also found that "poverty is not destiny, and some schools and districts hugely outperform expectations." See where your school district lands on their map, identify the outliers, and study what's working in those districts.
